Review of the Weekend

The weekend started with a bang with a nice winner at Reading on Thursday evening. Laburnum, trained by Chris & Shaun Gresham, was in front after 4-5 strides and won the open 660m contest at 4/1 holding off the run of Rosstemple Dream.

This was followed up on Friday evening with Klockwork Kyla continuing her impressive run of form by winning a hot A1 at Hall Green in a calculated 28.48 after leading from 3/4. She has now won her last 4 from 6 and been 2nd in the other 2 runs. With the Midland Oaks on the horizon we have all fingers crossed she can stay sound and keep improving to take her place in the competition.

The only downside to Friday evening was Hondo Dingle getting beat the shortest of shortheads at Youghal. Having smashed the boxes twice before they opened, he was slowly into his stride and struggled to make any real impression til hitting the 3rd bend where he started to show some true running only to be held off on the line. He qualified for next weeks semi-final were his luck once again deserted him by drawing Trap 5 !

On the way from Youghal to Dublin we called in top trainer Graham Hollands kennel where we saw the Handy Princess and Perfectly bred pups. We were also introduced to top trackers Rough Quest, Attykitt Admiral and up and coming pup, Hovex Boy. Photos of our visit will be added later this evening.

Saturday saw Klockwork Kim hit the track for her 2nd run back since her extended break. Having turned 2nd to the leader she could find no way past and was beaten into 2nd by 1l in a time of 28.72. With another run under her belt, it won't be long before Kim returns to winning ways hopefully.

Obviously Saturday's star attraction was the Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park. Having bet Shelbourne Aston at 50/1 antepost (only for peanuts mind you !) we were delighted to see him catch Slip the Lark on the line to take the sports star prize. Thoughts had to be with the connections of Slip the Lark who were stood right next to us. To get to the Derby final would be amazing in itself, but to get beat by the shortest of short heads must be a feeling of great prideon one hand, and utter disappointment on the other.

The night had started shakely with Handy Princess getting beat in the bitches race by, arguably, the best bitch in Ireland currently. Kidallon Maid ran a great race to catch Champagne Linda at the 3rd with Handy Princess running a great race to get up for second.

We managed to get out of trouble with the a nice winner in the shape of Rough Quest. This was followed up later in the evening with the hugely impressive Broadacres Turbo. Going off at an easily backable 3/1, Turbo was in front from the boxes and ran a great race to break the clock at the HQ of greyhound racing. Congratulations must go to Graham on what is a huge training feat, and to the owner.

The night soon rolled onto the early hours of Sunday morning which resulted in a few sore heads the next day !

Rich bought Lewis in October 2004 after he was disqualified at Monmore. We trained him at our local flap for a year where he was top grade, finishing 2nd to Legal Lad in the Devon Derby. He also broke the TR at Glastonbury. When our flaps closed he was sent to Poole to run however the track didn't suit him and he moved to Coventy in 2006 where he was trained by Barry Denby. After he injured his gracilis muscle we decided to retire him and Lewis has lived at home with us since May '07.

Klockwork Kim

Klockwork Kim
Kim was reared by Graham Cleverly and started her career at Poole where she progressed to A2 breaking the sectional TR, after a seasonal rest she was moved to Hall Green where she is competing in top heat contests trained by Paul Sallis.

Klockwork Kyla

Klockwork Kyla
Kyla was sent over from top breeder Con Kelleher who reared the likes of Line of Fire, Handy Princess, Go Edie Honda, Firshill Boy etc etc she made a slow start to her racing career by deciding that she wasn't interested in chasing. After some perserverence and top training by Paul and the team Kyla soon shot to A1 and has won a maiden open. Her fastest time to date being 28.35 (which is one of the top 5 times for a bitch to go around in this year - I think)

Klockwork Ike

Klockwork Ike
We chose Johnny when he was born, we reared and schooled him ourselves. He is yet to race but we are hoping to see him on the track in the near future.

We bought Honey in 2006 when she was disqualified at Wimbledon. She raced for us at Newton Abbot and Glastonbury. When those tracks closed she was sent to Coventry with Barry Denbury where she climbed up through the grades. We collected her from Barry when we took Lewis home and Honey was re-homed with a lovely, dog mad family in Wales. She was a real sweetie to own and I miss her very much. She could not have wished for a better home.

Oscar is a recent purchase after an impressive run around Derry. He is now in the UK and trailing in as we speak, more updates to come soon.

Farloe Orchid

Farloe Orchid
Orchid was purchased as a 15 month old pup from top breeder Dessie Loughery. She moved to Graham and Nicky Holland where she has won 3 from 6 including the €6,100 Central Gill A4 Stake. I will post a picture up as soon as I see her.
